Adding stairs can be a bit tricky if you haven’t done it before so hopefully this guide will be useful! You can only add stairs once you have completed the Multi Story Renovations Quest.
Once that is completed you can add a new floor, to do this, click on floor construction (second tab in the house section of home store) Then you will see a white highlighted area, click that and it will show you how much a new floor will cost you, click the green tick to buy it:
Then you need to add rooms to your new floor, you do this by clicking on the upstairs button on the right of the screen:
This will take you to the next level, then you can add a room like you normally do, if you don’t know how read my adding, deleting and resizing rooms post here
NOTE: you must add rooms to the second floor before you can add stairs!
Lastly you can add the stairs. Stairs can also be found in the house section, select the one you want to buy and you can then place it in your house:

Why can’t I place stairs in my house?
- There may be something in the way downstairs (like in my picture above)
- You may be trying to place stairs through the white lines- the white dotted lines show you were the rooms are above so you cannot place stairs on them:
- There may be something in the way on the floor above- use the floor button on the side of your screen to see what is in the way upstairs (the squares will appear red if there is something in the way upstairs)
To fix this you could move items upstairs that are in the way, if you can’t because a wall is in the way you may need to choose a different style of stairs which is what I did, I couldn’t fit in these stairs so I decided on the compact staircase instead.
This picture is how it should look when you can place the stairs in your house, press the green tick to buy them:
You now have stairs in your house!

If you want your stairs to reach the second floor you will need to place your stairs on the ground floor
If I delete my house will I still have the 2nd and 3rd floors or will I have to buy them again?
Unfortunately you will have to buy them again now, they have annoyingly changed this!

No, the maximum is still four

You don’t need to complete it in time to finish it, if you have the stairs and can add another floor then you have done the quest 🙂

Can an elevator get you from ground floor (1) to the 3rd floor. I added an elevator to go from 1 to 2 nod floor. Now I want yo add a 3 rd floor. Do I have go buy another elevator for 2 to 3 or can my elevator be used for all floors. Elevators are expensive.

They have annoyingly changed this in the latest update, you now have to rebuy floors when you delete a house, sorry you can’t undo it!

I’ve built my second story and put in all the rooms and set up stairs but I can’t put anything up there. Like my sims can go between the different levels but whenever I click on an item in my inventory to put it upstairs it brings me back to the first floor and tries to get me to put it down there, what do I do?

I have made a large third floor – there is nothing in the way between the third and second floor but i can;t put stairs onto the third floor….it keeps jumping to floor 1. i have stairs from floor 1 to 2 but can’t get them going to third floor

Do you have a three story house? You can’t put stairs on the 3rd floor then. But if you have more floors, you should be able to click the upstairs button to put the stairs on that floor

Do you have rooms upstairs? Or is it just going to the ground floor when you try to add doors and furniture? When you click on the item you want to place and it goes downstairs just press the upstairs button to place on the next floor.

Have you just deleted the rooms from the second floor? You probably will be able to use it again if you just add rooms upstairs again

You can on an existing house, you will probably need to add a new floor first though (and then rooms upstairs) as shown in the post, then move everything out of the way so you can place the stairs where you want them
How do I make a second floor smaller than the first? For example, making an attic.
It won’t look like it is smaller from the outside, all you can do really is just add rooms to the second floor that take up less space than the ground floor

I have a question do you have to build a second store for the baby because I have a quest know which is to build a second store for the baby but I am only up to level 10 and I haven’t don’t the multi story renovations quest. If you haven’t completed the multi story renovations quest then you will not be able to build a second story yet and you need to complete the two and a half sims quest to add babies to your town

I placed a firepole in my boathouse, but my sim won’t use it. The green arrows show that it should be accessible from the floor. Any ideas of what I can do? (P.S. It cost S700,000 for the second floor and the firepole, so now I have little money to try again.)
Can they access the steps to get up? If the steps are facing a wall it may need rotating

Hi! If I have multiple separate buildings on my lot, what is the trick to only add/remove a second floor to a specific building? I have one lot that I did it with no problem, but when I added a second floor to a different lot, it added to both buildings…I don’t think I did anything different, but I am afraid to choose the delete floor option because I don’t want it to remove the second floor from both buildings. I’m not 100% sure on this to be honest! I thought they made it so when you add a second floor it only adds it to one of the buildings if they are separated, if they are connected it will just add it to both which is how it is working on my game. Although I do not know if it will delete both of them, sorry!

So I didn’t delete the floor, but I did delete the first floor of the building I wanted to fix and it worked correctly when I readded the rooms. 🙂

I’ve found your site incredibly useful for so many things, from quests to neighbors. So, thank you for keeping it updated and easy to use. But there’s a problem I’m having.
I built the DIY home. I’ve managed to carry my kitten upstairs and I’ve put my dog’s water and food bowls as well as his home on the second floor balcony. I’ve tried calling him to all of them but he won’t go. I want to if he should be able to use the stairs or no. Thank you.

I’ve added a room on the front of my house on the 1st floor to a house with 2 floors. I have tried deleting the room downstairs but it says it’s supporting an upstairs area when it’s not, I’ve tried everything and nothing’s working – what should I do!
I have had this problem too, it seems to be a glitch, I just left it but if it really is bothering you I suggest you contact EA to let them know about the issue to see if they can fix it for you.
